About The 1943 Magazine

About Us

Why, of all the years, is the magazine named after the year 1943?
That is the year in which 13 young, largely unschooled Somali youth came together to form an assembly to exchange ideas, and compare notes on what their people were going through at the time: colonialism. In the years that followed, that nonviolent assembly grew in popularity, and the rest is history. This magazine is the home for daring analysis of the Somali experience, and through prose, we add to Somalis' ongoing literary renaissance, by platforming their ideas and amplifying their thought.
